What’s the Story?
Japan is world-renowned for its marvelous cherry blossom season, and Tokyo is no exception. Swaths of the city turn various shades of pink as the numerous cherry trees, known as ‘sakura’ in Japan, all bloom in a brief span in early April. Japanese locals take to the parks, gardens, and shrines to enjoy the natural splendor and usher in the rebirth of Spring. Our goal will be too capture the bloom, but also the festivities.
What We’ll Shoot
We will focus our attention, and our cameras, not only on the cherry blossoms themselves, but also their context. The trees are usually found in traditional and story-rich settings such as shrines and gardens, often frequented by people. Combining the blossoms with architecture and human life will enrich the quality of our photos. Since the blossoms are found up in trees, we will likely work with telephoto lenses, which will also help us achieve a shallow depth of field even without the aid of large apertures.
Where We’ll Explore
Prime spots for cherry blossoms in Tokyo are typically Shinto shrines. So, we will begin out adventure at Hie Shrine. Though it is home to a few large and old sakura trees, the shrine itself is beautiful in its own right. Next we will make our way to Yasukuni Shrine, which is home to numerous cherry trees and is frequented by locals who wish to picnic under the pink blossoms. The shrine is also adjacent to Chidorigafuchi, the embankment of the imperial palace where hundreds of cherry trees overlook the palace moat.
